Virus threat from e-mail

We don't usually mention every new virus or other malware threat that comes along but this one might be particularly nasty.

On Friday the 3rd (and every 3rd day of the month) a virus named Blackmal or Nyxem will be introduced that will target your important data files; Word, Excel, Access, Powepoint and Acrobat PDFs - and will try to delete them from your PC.

You are smart enough to

1) Have current, updated antivirus protection and

2) Not open e-mails with Subject lines such as:

  • *Hot Movie*
  • A Great Video
  • Fw:
  • Fw: DSC-00465.jpg
  • Fw: Funny :)
  • Fw: Picturs
  • Fw: Real show
  • Fw: SeX.mpg
  • Fw: Sexy
  • Fwd: Crazy illegal Sex!
  • Fwd: image.jpg
  • Fwd: Photo
  • give me a kiss
  • Miss Lebanon 2006
  • My photos
  • Part 1 of 6 Video clipe
  • Photos

  • School girl fantasies gone bad
Just delete any such messages without opening them. If by some chance you open such an e-mail DO NOT click on/open the attachment that comes with it. Just delete the message.

It never hurts to backup important files before the release of such a threat (today!) and to run a virus scan before and after the day of the threat.

The Symantec antivirus website has detailed information on the threat.
